Good Times in Belfast!

posted Mar 4, 2010 6:06 AM by John Zavodny

Thanks to Polly at Village Farm for inviting us to play at this past Sunday's CSA/CSF Fair at the UU Church in Belfast.  And thanks to The Wildcardz for joining us in supporting local agriculture (and aquaculture).

Ready for spring, and as I said at the fair on Sunday, I consider this the start of the growing season.

What better way to begin the close of the 2009 Farmer's Market Tour than to play Common Ground?  DWO played two well-attended shows in the sun at Common Ground on Saturday.  Thanks to Lucy and Tim for organizing.  DWO hearts MOFGA!

Love from Damariscotta

posted Jul 6, 2009 4:40 AM by Dog Wants Out

Dear Sara,

Thank you so much for coming out and gracing our market with musical sunshine on this grey morning!  You and your musical companions were fantastic and the Food Independence Day event wouldn't have been so great a success without you.  Please convey our gratitude to the rest of the group as well!

Happy fourth of July!

Food Independence Day in Damariscotta

"For purple mounds of mashed potatoes..."

Thanks so much to Brady and all the great vendors, shoppers, dancers, and mini-potters at the Damariscotta Farmer's Market.  A day filled with asian noodles, grilled halumi, garlic scapes, fresh cut flowers and fresh baked bread.  Not bad at all.

See you next week on Friday in Freeport!

DWO @ Camden!

posted Jun 25, 2009 6:30 AM by John Zavodny

Thanks to the Wednesday Camden Farmer's Market for a great time (and some great goodies) yesterday despite the soupy weather.  (When hasn't it been soupy lately?)

Anna, Sara, and John were joined by John's brother Tim for some tunes; that helped the band not miss Rob quite so much.  Check out the pictures on our Music and Pics page.

Next show Saturday at home in Unity at the Unity Barn Raisers "Promote Yourself" celebration of local economy.  Check the calendar for details and other upcoming shows.

Stonington Stew

posted Jun 13, 2009 4:37 AM by John Zavodny

The soupy weather yesterday led to a postponement for Dog Wants Out's performance at the Stonington Farmer's Market.  But no fear!  We're working with market organizers to reschedule for later this summer.

Tardif "Review" of DWO

posted Jun 10, 2009 9:50 AM by John Zavodny

Mark Tardif, Assoc. Dir. of Communications at Unity College offered this tongue-in-cheek review of DWO's performance at the UC Staff Appreciation picnic...

Who Let the Dogs Out?

During the cookout employees were serenaded by the faculty and staff band entitled Dog Wants Out, which is currently on a summer and fall tour of farmer’s markets across Maine.

The band features Farm and Landscape Manager Sara Trunzo ’08 on vocals and mandolin; Director of Student Health Services Anna McGalliard on banjo and vocals; Professor John Zavodny on guitar and vocals; and Vice President for College Advancement Rob Constantine on keyboards.

A highlight of their performance was an interpretive version of the Kenny Chesney song “She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy,” sung with brooding intensity by Trunzo with added power provided by McGalliard’s blistering banjo lines.

This song was not so much supported as it was first surrounded, then attacked by Zavodny and Constantine.  They provided an urgent, at turns troubling, psychedelic tapestry to the Chesney standard and seemed inspired by the West Coast country scene.

The band was presented with the first-ever Good Spirit Award for surviving intermittent winds off Unity Pond that gusted to 30 miles per hour.

“Once Sara Trunzo got her sheet music anchored, the band was unstoppable,” noted Zane. “The band was really on their game despite the weather with Sara’s voice reaching every corner of the Field of Dreams and beyond, probably across Unity Pond.”

A self-described member of the “dog pound,” the heady group of committed, hard-core Dog Wants Out fans who often hand out free vegetables at concerts, Zane voiced his regret at having to leave the concert early to participate in the softball game.

“Life is full of hard choices,” mused Zane, unfocused eyes aimlessly scanning the horizon.

His favorite band member is Trunzo, whose voice Zane describes a “cross between Whitney Houston and Ani DiFranco with the range of opera great Maria Callas.”

Another highlight of the show was Zavodny threatening to destroy his new Godin 5th Avenue Kingpin cognac colored P 90 single coil pickup acoustic / electric guitar in homage to Pete Townsend.

“Since we’re not playing a Who song, I’m not going to do it (destroy the guitar),” said Zavodny.  “If we had been, I’d take a world of hurt to this thing and test the sturdiness of this gazebo!”
